If you are an expert it anything you need an online course, I am going to tell you why and how to map it all out so its a breeze to create.
Today we’re going to cover how to create an online course outline and why you, yes you, need an online course in the first place. All right, let’s do it.
What’s going on? I’m doctor Ben Adkins and welcome to my youtube channel. If this is the first time that you’ve been here, I cover pretty much week after week all the cool things that you need to be doing in your business to grow it to seven to eight figures. But more importantly, do that from anywhere in the world. Traveling, hanging out at your house, hanging out at the pool, how to do all that from the backpack. So if you want more stuff like this, you want to be alerted anytime I post anything new, do me a favor, hit the subscribe button and then do yourself a favor. Hit the notification bell and you’ll be alerted right away every time we have a new video, go live on this very, very cool stuff.
So today we’re going to talk about how to create an outline for a course, an online course. Meaning you’re an expert, you’re good at something, you’re interested in something, you’ve done a lot of homework into it because like me, you’re a real big nerd about something and you think, “You know what? Maybe there’s other people that I can teach this stuff and you know what? Maybe they’ll pay me for it.” So how do you actually create that course outline. Okay, so we’re going to cover that and I’m going to have some good links for you today because I think this stuff’s very good.
So a little while back, I put out a video, very, very raw video by the way, and I’ll make sure that it pops up somewhere around here, about how I create courses on the fly, how I put courses together in the span of four or five days. That’s not just putting the course together, but also selling it and having big, big course launches anytime we put something out. I’ll link you to that. I’ll show you how we do it on the fly, but I want to give you a little behind the scenes of that and what a good course is all about. Because it’s all about segmenting things and putting walls around topics, but leading people through a process. So let’s talk about that.
A course, if you think about it, it’s taking the things that are in your brain that you are an expert in, putting it down somewhere so that someone else can take that information and put it into their head. So it makes what’s in your head, portable for someone else. And there’s a lot of value in that. I literally make millions of dollars a year by taking things that I’m nerdy about, that I spend all my time in front of the computer doing. And I put it down into a video course, an audio course or a written course like a pdf, and people pay me a lot of money week after week, year after year, day after day to go through that. So not only is this something where you can teach other people and really exchange value in an easy way, where they can watch it 24/7 or go through it 24/7 but you can also make a full time gig out of this. So that’s kind of cool, right?
So here’s the key. All of these courses, all of these things that we do, you got to think about it like this. Every good course, every good course out there. And of course there’s a variation above and below, but every good course has five parts or what I like to call five chapters. So if you think of a book on how to do something, five good chapters typically are your big broad points. Okay? Now you could have six, you could have seven, you could have four but it’s typically, I aim for everything that I do to have around five chapters. And the reason is is because around five chapters is what’s not too much information to consume, it’s not too little as well.
So five chapters. Now within those five chapters, and I’m gonna give you an example in just a minute, but within those five chapters, you got to think each of those five chapters usually has five minor parts within it. So every big topic that you want to cover typically has five little pieces that lead through that topic. Now, as I said, it could be three pieces, it could be seven pieces, but that’s how you break it down. So what I typically do is, I’ll sit down with a notebook, I’ll sit down with an online word doc and I’ll just use bullet points. And those bullet points are my five big chapters. Then underneath, that we’ll click the little button that points the bullet points that way. I have no idea what that button’s called, by the way. But what it does is we’ll have five little bullet points underneath that. So every time I’m thinking about putting a course together, that’s the way I’m thinking. Five big chapters, five little bullet points within each chapter. You get the idea.
So from there you got to think, how should those things be connected? Well in each chapter, you should be walking from the beginning to the end of the thing. Now let me clarify that, because that’s not clear at all. The beginning is I have no idea how to do the thing that you are teaching me. The end is I can go do this and so each chapter should walk someone through that process. So the first chapter would be just getting them started, just showing them how to do something, but then linking to the next chapter.
So at the end of each chapter or the end of each video course, I say, “You know what? I just taught you how to do these things. Now that you know how to do this, I can teach you how to do this next thing.” We start the next chapter out with, “I just taught you how to do this. Now I’m going to teach you how to do this,” and so on and so forth. Now let me give you an example of what that actually feels like. I recently put out a course on how to rock out Facebook ads, like how to do it different than everybody else, but how to do it in a way that’s so different that it makes you stand out. And it was called the Facebook ads backpack guide. Now what’s so special about this is it follows the exact model that I was just teaching you and let me walk you through the five big parts of this course.
Part one was I was teaching you how to put together a great offer, so that it would actually be something people on Facebook would get excited about it. So before we even get to the ad, how do you put together the kind of offer that does well on Facebook? Part two is how do you put together a good ad creator, meaning how do you put together a good picture for your ad but also ad copy that does really, really well and we covered long form and short form within that. Part three is ad targeting. Now that you’ve got a good offer. Now that you’ve got a good ad creative, how do you do the targeting inside of that? Notice how I’m slowly walking you through no knowledge about the topic, but giving you all the pieces that you need as we lay this out. Part four, ad tracking. You’ve got this offer, you’ve got the creative, you’ve got the targeting. Now how do you actually track your results if you’re doing more than one ad? So we teach that.
And then finally, once you’ve got all of those things in place and you start to have some winners, part five is how do you scale? How do you scale? How do you put more money into the ads? How do you gap the ads up so that you can do really good stuff? Now notice, even if you don’t know anything about Facebook ads, just listening to me go through the five steps, the five things that you have to learn to get good at them, you feel like you’ve got a little bit more knowledge on the topic. Now think about as you go through the course, how well that is. By the way, there’s a link to the course at the bottom if you want to go check it out.
But all that aside, that’s how you put together a good online course. So you may have never done it before, but what I want you to think about is with the thing that I would love to teach people and get paid to teach people online, what are the five big points that I could teach that take them from no knowledge all the way to giving them the ability to do something? And then what are the five minor points within each of those big chapters or those big parts that make those up? Start to map that out and you’re going to have all the makings of a really good course.
All right, so I hope you enjoyed this short little tutorial today. Something that can really help you to take what’s in your head, put it down so that someone else can put it in their head and they’ll pay you for the privilege.
If you like this stuff, then I would just ask that you click the subscribe button. That’ll let you know every time we’ve got something coming out, but more importantly, hit the notification bell. It alerts your right away. And listen, you got questions about this. I’m here. I love helping out. I love answering anything that you have. I have built a business by helping other people out there, and I’d like to help you. Whether you’ve ever bought anything from me or not, I’m here to help other people have the same luck that I have and to be able to do it from a backpack. All right, so I hope you enjoyed the video. I’ve got lots more cool stuff coming for you. I will see you next time.
